Guitar for Beginners
Learning to play the six-string acoustic guitar is not as difficult as it may seem. The most important aspects of learning guitar for beginners are desire, patience and enjoyment of the process. As long as you look forward to picking up the instrument, you will learn something new each time you play it. Get to Know Your Guitar
If you are right handed and are seated while playing, the guitar will rest comfortably on your right leg with your right arm resting over the top of its body and your hand on the strings near the hole of the body, for strumming. Your left hand will lightly grip the neck of the guitar for picking. If you are left handed, positioning will be the opposite of these hand placements.
From your hand placements, quickly review the guitar’s main parts:
- Body: Large main wooden structure of the guitar, where strings are strummed by the player’s dominant hand
- Neck: Long thin structure which extends from the body and on which strings run, also sometimes called the “fretboard”
- Frets: Thin metal strips running perpendicularly under the strings on the neck for reduction of vibration when strings are pressed onto the fretboard, thus creating varied pitch
- Bridge: Point from which the strings run, extending over the hole in the guitar and onto the neck
- Tuning pegs: Turning knobs for adjustment of strings and the sounds they make according to level of tension, located on the head of the neck
Musical Notes and Chords of the Guitar
The 12 primary notes on the modern western musical scale are simply described as sound waves traveling through the air at a certain frequency, which may be varied in pitch. The pitch varies for a particular note when the vibration of the guitar string is faster or slower than that same note at a different pitch. On a guitar, placement of the hands and use of the fingers along the body and fretboard of the instrument vary the vibration levels of the six strings, producing all of the notes and pitches needed to play music. A chord is simply a group of these notes played at the same time.
Knowing the main parts of the guitar, placement of hands and how strings are utilized to create musical notes are the first basic steps toward emulating some of your favorite musical performers. After becoming initially acquainted with your instrument, you are ready for that first formal lesson and to learn how to actually create the notes, pitches, scales, and chords which will comprise all of the songs you wish to play. Bearing in mind that creating music should be fun is the first step toward becoming the player you wish to be, whether your music is for self-enjoyment or for crowds of thousands.
